Judges 6:11-24

In this chapter we’re introduced to a guy named Gideon, which means “One who cuts to pieces” or “Slasher” for short. he was a farmer who was using his brain to hide the wheat from the Midianites by threshing in a wine press.

When Gideon is approached by the Angel of the Lord, he is called a “mighty man of valor” and with a name like “Slasher” I’m not surprised. Then the Angel of the Lord says, “The Lord is with you.”

Does Gideon say, “That’s great! I was expecting that!” No. He doesn’t believe it. In fact, he brings up the exodus as if the Angel hadn’t heard and explains to him, that God couldn’t be with them if they were still under control of the Midianites.

But God had said in Joshua 1:5, “I will never abandon you!” And God sends His Angel to Gideon to tell him that He never left. Again, “Slasher” still doesn’t believe and asks for a sign, so he runs home to prepare a sacrifice! Showing God’s patience with Gideon the Angel of the Lord waits for Gideon to return. This is a picture of how God was waiting for Israel to return. So when Gideon gets back the Angel is still there! Gideon puts out the offering and it burns up then the Angel disappears. But God is still with Gideon and speaks again to give him peace. So He names the places “Yahweh Shalom” which means “The Lord is Peace.”

Joshua 1:5- I will not abandon you.
Judges 6:12 God is with you.

God was still with Gideon, and it is the same today. He is with us. Not only is He everywhere at all times, but He is present with us for our good. Let’s see how God continues this:

Isaiah 7:14 Immanuel- God with us
Isaiah 9:2-4 God destroyed the Midianites
John 1:11-14 God made His home among us.
Matthew 28:20- He is with us always
Ephesians 6:10-13 Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.
Philippians 4:12-13 Through Christ all things are possible.
Hebrews 13:5- What can man do?
Romans 8:31- God is for us and nothing can separate us!

If we are Christians, God has made Himself deeper than our hearts, and we cannot escape Him. We shouldn’t want to, and because He’s so deep, He is the only source of power for us to overcome temptation and to continue to follow Him. He will fight these battles for us! We must submit to His leadership and remember that it is His fight and He is the only One powerful enough to defeat our unbelief and give us peace.
