The Righteous Shall Live by Faith
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith (from first to last), as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Faith is not conditional on our moods, it cannot be flung around like wave tossed on the sea. It is constant in the positive direction; a Christian’s faith may always be growing. By conditional I mean attaching a hypothetical statement to belief. In science that we have learned growing up a hypothesis is a result that happens only if there is a certain cause. With faith there is no “if”, there is only a cause and a result. The “if” is replaced by the word “since”.
Faith is not just belief in the post-modern sense of the word. A person can believe something is true or factual and act like it is not. They may say and think one thing, but they may act differently. A man may say, “I believe in God,” but he may live like he does not. Belief is a choice, we can all choose what we believe. You may choose to believe that what I’m saying is true because you think that I am a reliable source. Belief is somewhat uncertain. A man may not act on his belief because of lack of evidence. If we have faith, our moods must not then dictate our beliefs.
Faith is different. It is a certainty.
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
True faith will hold up despite our emotions. True faith stands the test of pain and persecution.
17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:17-18
Though no one has seen God we can see that He exists through the things He created. These things are just shadows of the real thing though. The unseen things are eternal. God is unseen and eternal.
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
True faith will stay constant despite our longing for sin to be okay. Faith cannot be ignored under temptation true faith leads to obedience. Though if we are disobedient it does not mean that we lack faith completely. Obedience cannot exist without faith, it is an action that is totally dependent on faith. When faith and obedience coexist continually it is called perseverance.
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works;
Faith is based on evidence. Keep in mind that science cannot prove or disprove God. Science can only disprove things, but it has not disproven that God exists because it is not testable. Science can provide evidence though. Science can disprove that a broken cellphone when shaken in a bag will become a working cell phone again. By statistics and probability it can test and reevaluate thoughts on evolution. The probability of the production of one enzyme from inorganic matter is orders of magnitude higher than what scientists claim is impossible (1×10^50). Negative evidence can rule out those possibilities.
Science cannot test God because He cannot be measured in any way. He is infinite in quality and quantity. He is much bigger than we will ever imagine Him to be. So it makes sense that we cannot totally understand this God. He is a mystery, but He has let us in on the clues and the answer. Faith is the avenue we must then take. His evidence is His Word (the Judge), testimonies of His followers, nature itself, our pictures of right and wrong, and His work in our lives personally. Though we have this evidence we cannot understand God fully because we are human and finite, He is spirit and infinite.
As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.
